Men I work with have their own sense of style or at least mostly interested in experimenting with something a little less predictable, each one takes clothing in their own expression and connection.
I personally believe dressing is like love, you must appreciate how accurate the shape feels on your body and how sensational and romantic the fabrics are, you impersonate elegance and let people be a part of it.
Question is how many times have you purchased “love” off the rack, you continue to look for that one piece which gives you that feeling. Style & dressing like love is created – its unique and it grows with you; for some people its unnecessary and for some its a way of communicating with world.
One such sartorial secret is based in Western suburbs of Mumbai, “SS Homme”.
Beautiful furnishing and beaming lights make this an elegant studio for a bespoke designer, Sarah Sheikh.
With a degree in design from London and backed by her experience by interning with the pioneers of men’s fashion – GQ Magazine. SS Homme make beautifully tailored clothing ranging from suits to shirts as well as ties, a specific fit and articulate tailoring that creates a mood and an aesthetic that can be a perfect mix of classic dressing, unique fabric and current trends.
I got an opportunity to meet the dynamic team of two Sandeep Gonsalves & Sarah Sheikh, the mind and the spirit of SS Homme, to talk about how the journey started and what inspires them. Sandeep heads the Marketing & branding for SS Homme.
Sf: Their are numerous International labels offering variety of designs for Men, then how the idea of a bespoke service for men conceived?
SS Homme: Men around were having a tough time meeting their sartorial needs from even the best labels around. If the fit was right, the fabric wasn’t, if the fabric was, the colour wasn’t, or the prices were simply unaffordable. We wanted people to see design & clothing in their own individuality and creative tastes and them to have an ownership of what they were wearing, SS homme evolved from there.
Sf: How do you think SS Homme is different from such Brands?
SS Homme: A shirt off the rack in a retail store with distinguished details might end up tacky and cheap but at SS homme you are given an impeccable quality fit to measure with subtle detailing and a range of fabrics. We believe SS homme is all about adventure & continue to make our customers look for an adventurous yet relevant look for them.
Sf: Who can we say is the coveted customer of SS Homme?
SS Homme: We’d like to think that our customer is someone who enjoys and appreciates getting dressed. Most of our customers are driven by the quality of our fabrics, unique designs & styles and tailoring that is perfected to detail. The whole experience of our customer must be unique and special and our brand resonates very well within that type of environment. All our customers are mostly high profiled executive and really sharp dressers, we like to find luxe fabrics for them from all across the world and make one of a kind piece for them.
The process is pretty simple you walk into the studio. Choose the style and design from a huge design repository or just spend some time with Sarah to get one designed to your hearts desire. Choose the fabric from Linen to Wool and even decide for the inter lining. It generally takes ten days for trial fittings and five more days after that for the suit to be delivered.
